HKIMR seminar - Advancing Talent Development in Financial Services: Emerging Global Trends and Their Impact on Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Academy of Finance (AoF) and the Hong Kong Institute for Monetary and Financial Research (HKIMR) hosted a seminar titled "Advancing Talent Development in Financial Services: Emerging Global Trends and Their Impact on Hong Kong" on 25 January 2024.

The seminar brought together approximately 60 industry leaders, including C-suite executives, HR and other business heads from financial institutions and industry associations.

Dr Giorgio Valente, Head of the HKIMR first gave an overview of the report, including the latest trends driving the talent developments in Hong Kong and other IFCs.

Mr Enoch Fung, CEO of the AoF and Executive Director of the HKIMR then chaired a panel comprising Mr Larry Cao, former Senior Director at CFA Institute; Mr Robert Rooks, CEO of R.J. Advisors and former Partner at Deloitte; and Professor Kar Yan Tam, Dean of the School of Business and Management at HKUST. The panel covered several important observations:

• The industry is facing talent challenges due to decreasing allure, shifting employee priorities, and evolving skill requirements

• The industry has reacted proactively and further enhancement will require making people management a business priority

• Hong Kong exhibits clear advantages in attracting talent, as evident by market views and the recent surge of talent inflow

• Upskilling and adaptation are necessary for harnessing the potentials of artificial intelligence in improving productivity
