6-7 June 2024

The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), Bank for International Settlements (BIS), Hong Kong Academy of Finance (AoF), Hong Kong Institute for Monetary and Financial Research (HKIMR), and Business School of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology co-organised the NBER East Asian Seminar on Economics 2024 on 6-7 June 2024.

The seminar featured welcoming remarks by Mr Darryl Chan, Deputy Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), keynote speeches by Professor Hélène Rey from London Business School and Professor Fabrizio Zilibotti from Yale University, and 9 stimulating academic presentations.

Mr Chan discussed the experience of Hong Kong navigating global shocks over the past 40 years and highlighted the importance of understanding the implications of disturbances, from pandemic and supply chain disruptions to monetary policy changes and geopolitical tensions on key aspects of the global economy. Professors Rey and Zilibotti’s keynotes explored spillovers of US and Chinese monetary policies through global financial and trade cycles and the implications of service-led economic growth on inequality and the environment.
