Dialogue with Andrew Sheng
24 July 2024
Mr Andrew Sheng, Distinguished Fellow at the Institute for Capital Market Research, Malaysia, and former central banker and financial regulator, had an engaging dialogue with the 2023 & 2024 FLP cohorts online on 24 July 2024.
During the interactive dialogue moderated by Ms Carol Lam, Head of International Business Compliance, Ant Group, Mr Sheng discussed the changing global economy and financial landscape, and the ASEAN-Hong Kong financial nexus. He discussed the changes brought by geopolitics, climate change, disruptive technology, demographic changes/migration and rise of populist national and regional responses. He also highlighted that financial intermediation has increasingly broadened from the traditional banking sector to the non-bank sector (i.e. capital market, venture capital, digital platforms), and that CBDC, Tokenization, and cyber currency would be key areas to watch going forward. He noted that ASEAN was the fourth largest economy if counted as one body, and was a key market for China. So it is crucial for Hong Kong to foster greater partnership with ASEAN counterparts in areas of offshore RMB, FDI and asset management opportunities. In developing the ASEAN market, Mr Sheng shared that cultivating relationship played an important role. Mr Sheng also exchanged views with participants on a wide range of issues, including the geopolitical developments, cryptocurrencies, and Hong Kong’s role as an international financial centre.
