Dr David Wong is Chairman of the Council of the Education University of Hong Kong, and Chairman of the Panel of Advisors of the Land Sharing Pilot Scheme of the HKSAR.
David received a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Chicago in 1987. He served as a Research Economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia from 1987-1991. He also served variously as a Teaching Fellow and Lecturer in economics at the University of Chicago, the University of Pennsylvania, and Temple University.
After serving as Director of China Business Development at W.I. Carr Indosuez Capital Asia Limited between 1993-1996, David joined his family business United Overseas Enterprises Company Limited, which has extensive investment holdings in Hong Kong and the Mainland. David initiated and managed the company’s direct investments in power generation, information technology, synthetic leather, as well as trading of petrochemical products.
An economist by training, David has always been active in public policy research and practice. Other than serving as a member of the Exchange Fund Advisory Committee (2011-21), he served as Chairman of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (2015-21), Chairman of Protection of Wages on Insolvency Fund Board (2012-18), Chairman of Societal Engagement Task Force, Commission on Poverty (2012-14), and Chairman of Land and Development Advisory Committee (2012-18).
David also served as a member of the CE’s Council of Advisors on Innovation and Strategic Development (2018-22), Financial Leaders’ Forum (2017-21), Economic Development Commission (2013-18), Central Policy Unit (2010-11), Steering Committee on Innovation and Technology (2010-12), ICAC Citizens Advisory Committee on Community Relations (2009-12), among others.
As an industry leader, David also served as President of The Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong (2010-11) and Chairman of the Business & Professionals Federation of Hong Kong (2012-15). David is also a Hong Kong Deputy to the 12th and 13th National People’s Congress.
For his contributions to industry and community, David received the title of Honorary Fellow from Lingnan University (2012), Vocational Training Council (2013), Hong Kong Baptist University (2018) and Hong Kong Metropolitan University (2020). David was also appointed a Justice of the Peace (JP) in 2010 and received the Bronze Bauhinia Star (BBS) in 2012 and Gold Bauhinia Star (GBS) in 2017.
